Goethe in Time of Changing

Goethe im Umbruch

​

Goethe was always very attentive to the upheavals that characterized the era in which he lived, regardless of his “political” or “cultural” evaluation concerning these same changes. Who studied the texts of Giuliano Baioni knows well that the “Italian” approach to Goethe’s work goes through the upheavals that characterized his youth with the overcoming of the Empfindsamkeit poetics and the long confrontation he had with the ideals of French revolution, with which he in some ways contrasted, but at last he recognized as winners. We can say that Goethe has had towards the historical-cultural events, that have characterized his long life, the attitude of the scientist: the problem does not arise if a phenomenon is good or bad, but through the careful observation and experimental verification, one has to take note of it. This approach is brilliantly summarized in one of his maxims: “Do not look for the theory beyond the facts: they are already in themselves theory”.

This issue of “links” aims to analyze how this scientific attitude has had an influence on the drafting of some works of Goethe produced in moments of great upheavals and how he has represented these cultural “turns”. Perhaps we can say that, in the constant search for “Self-Overcoming”, which Goethe expresses well in his concept of “streben”, he has performed his best in seeking new languages, new narratives, new poetics to communicate with the public of “new times”.

And perhaps just this is the lesson that Goethe gives to the readers (and, even more so, to the writers) of the following generations: we must not remain anchored to old mental schemes and situations now definitively overcome by history, but we must look for and find new languages, new forms of artistic expression to give sense of literary writing

The proposals, in English (maximum 300 words), should be sent to the address: links.rivista@gmail.com or to the editor of the journal, Mauro Ponzi, mauro.ponzi@uniroma1.it, by November 15th, 2018.
The editorial committee will evaluate the abstracts and convey to the authors the papers that have been accepted for “links” 18. Authors shall receive positive or negative response before December 15th, 2018. They should then sent their contribution by February 15th, 2019.

“Links” is a peer review journal Links and hence the essays will be subject to the evaluation of anonymous referees.
Contributions can be written in English, German, French or Italian and should not exceed 35.000 characters.

Timing:

• -  The abstract in English (maximum 300 words) should be sent by November 15th, 2018

• -  The editorial committee will communicate which essays will be considered by December 15th, 2018

• -  The authors have to send the essays (max. 35.000 characters) by February 15th, 2019

• -  The referee’s evaluation will be communicate by April 1st, 2019

• -   Closing: May 15th, 2019

Goethe e i tempi di cambiamento

Goethe è stato sempre molto sensibile ai rivolgimenti che hanno caratterizzato l’epoca in cui ha vissuto, a prescindere dalla sua valutazione “politica” o “culturale” relativa a questi stessi cambiamenti. Chi ha studiato i testi di Giuliano Baioni sa bene che l’approccio “italiano” all’opera di Goethe passa attraverso i rivolgimenti che hanno caratterizzato la sua giovinezza con il superamento della poetica della Empfindsamkeit e il lungo confronto che ha avuto con gli ideali della rivoluzione francese, per certi versi avversati, ma alla fine riconosciuti come vincenti. Si può dire che Goethe ha avuto nei confronti degli avvenimenti storico-culturali che hanno caratterizzato la sua lunga vita, l’atteggiamento dello scienziato: non si pone il problema se un fenomeno sia bene o male, giusto o ingiusto, ma ne prende atto attraverso l’attenta osservazione e la verifica sperimentale. Questo atteggiamento è brillantemente riassunto in una delle sue Massime: “Non cercare la teoria oltre i fatti: essi sono già di per sé stessi teoria”. Questo numero di “links” vuole esaminare come questo atteggiamento scientifico abbia avuto un’influenza sulla stesura di alcune opere di Goethe prodotte nei momenti di grandi rivolgimenti e come egli abbia rappresentato queste “svolte” culturali. Forse si può dire che, nella ricerca costante di un “autosuperamento”, che Goethe esprime bene nel suo concetto di “streben”, egli abbia dato il meglio di sé proprio nel cercare nuovi linguaggi, nuove narrazioni, nuove poetiche per comunicare con il pubblico dei “tempi nuovi”. E forse è proprio questa la lezione che Goethe dà in eredità ai lettori (e, a maggior ragione, agli scrittori) delle generazioni successive: non bisogna rimanere ancorati a vecchi schemi mentali e a situazioni ormai definitivamente superate dalla storia, ma bisogna cercare e trovare nuovi linguaggi, nuove forme espressive per dare un senso allo scrivere letterario.

 

Si invitano coloro che sono interessati a queste tematiche a proporre un saggio per “links”, inviando un abstract in inglese di max. 300 parole entro il 15 novembre 2018 all’indirizzo della redazione, links.rivista@gmail.com e del direttore della rivista, mauro.ponzi@uniroma1.it.

Il comitato editoriale della rivista valuterà gli abstracts e comunicherà agli autori quali sono i saggi accettati. “Links” è una rivista peer review e quindi i saggi saranno sottoposti alla valutazione in forma anonima alla valutazione di referees. I saggi possono essere scritti in inglese, tedesco, francese, italiano e non devono superare le 35.000 battute (spazi inclusi).

 

Timing:

1. 15 novembre 2018: invio Abstract in inglese (max 300 parole)

2. 15 dicembre 2018: Valutazione interna abstract

3. 15 febbraio 2019: Consegna testi degli autori (max 35.000 battute spazi inclusi)

4. 1 aprile 2019: conclusione del referaggio

5. 15 maggio 2019: consegna definitiva dei testi revisionati
